BEL, the Public Utilities Commission and the Government of Belize Make Commitment to Energy Future

This afternoon, the Honourable Frank Mena of the Ministry of Public Service, Energy, and Public Utilities, Jeffrey Locke, the chief executive officer of Belize Electricity Services Limited (BEL), John Avery, the chair of the Public Utilities Commission expressed their commitment to providing reliable and sustainable energy through participation in the Belize Consolidated Project Plan (CPP).

The Belize CPP is a roadmap that will outline how to meet the electricity needs of Belize and its consumers over time. Providing access to reliable, affordable electricity is a priority for all parties. The CPP will ensure that sustainable options for electricity are pursued in the optimal approach for Belize, while harmonizing the efforts of these three leading organizations.

A team from the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) and Rocky Mountain Institute and Carbon War Room (RMI-CWR) will guide the CPP process. CCI and RMI-CWR are neutral third parties with no special interests or preferred vendors. They strive to create an open marketplace for renewables and sustainable energy.

The CPP is a critical step for Belize in its efforts toward fostering sustainable production and distribution of energy, minimizing the cost of energy in the local economy, mitigating the impacts of external shocks and creating a national culture of energy efficiency.

Belize National Project Coordinator

Title: Belize National Project Coordinator (Short Term Consultant)

Duration: 3-4 months

Duty Station: Belize

Background:

Island nations are in a unique position to reduce their dependence on imported fossil fuels and benefit from the positive environmental, social, and economic impacts of using sustainable energy sources. They can combine their abundant renewable resources with economically viable technologies to become more independent and resilient.

By accelerating the transition of Caribbean nations to include more renewable energy generation and energy efficiency, island governments, utilities and other stakeholders can:
• Reduce the dependence on imported fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions
• Stabilize the cost of electricity for households and businesses
• Increase investment opportunities and investment returns on-island
• Increase resiliency of the grid and defer maintenance on transmission and distribution
• Enhance and diversify the local job market with higher-skilled, better paying jobs

In the process, Caribbean nations will demonstrate that entire economies can transition to lowcarbon solutions while improving their long-term outlook.
