Recently the Energy Unit within the Ministry of the Public Service, Energy and Public Utilities in collaboration with the electrical students of ITVET Stann Creek, carried out energy conservation measures by installing LED lights in public buildings. Hope Creek Primary School, ITVET Stann Creek, Dangriga Police Station and the Dangriga Fire Station were all recipients of energy efficient LED tubes. The objective of this initiative was to promote energy efficiency in public buildings, aid in reducing consumption and to facilitate the development of the ITVET students’ technical knowledge and skills in preparation for a professional setting. The newly installed LED tubes are an ideal alternative to standard fluorescent tubes to maximize value over lifetime with high energy saving and lower maintenance costs.

A total of 185 tubes were installed at these locations. Considering the use of these 185 lights at each facility over a 5-year period, the fluorescents would cost a total of $55,302.91. The LED replacements will cost $27,651.46 for the same use within the same 5-year period. This reflects a combined savings of $27,651.46, accumulated over the next 5 years, for replacing the fluorescent with LEDs.

The installations were successful, and the students must be commended for a job well done. The Energy Unit continues to fulfil its mandate to promote energy efficiency via energy efficient technology across Belize.
